Social Europe - addressing the social and economic imbalance in the EU
by Paul Ginnell, Ireland

In the current economic crisis, and with 78 million people at risk of poverty in the EU, it is more important than ever that the EU in its Member States demonstrate a clear commitment that the social needs and rights of people are not subservient to needs of the economy.

This future of a social Europe needs to be publically debated in the run up to the European Elections and the second vote on the Lisbon Treaty. This should look at what more is needed from the EU which will support Member States to in particular address the needs of those at risk of poverty, social exclusion and inequality.
