Five Irish citizens were among 150 citizens from across the EU who took part in the pan-European summit in Brussels. They were Evelyn Boylan from Scotstown, County Monaghan; Noreen Kelly, Ballyvolane, Cork City; Niall O’Reilly from Maynooth, County Kildare; and Dubliners Brid Bowles, from Lusk and Michael Morrissey, Cabinteely (foreground) who was asked to share a platform with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and other top policy-makers.

Irish awareness of emergency number low

The emergency number was first introduced in 1991 and in 1998 all EU members were legally obliged to ensure that the number could be dialled free of charge from fixed lines and mobile phones.The 112 number, which complements Ireland's national emergency number of 999, is designed to be used by Europeans who travel throughout Europe and who find themselves in an emergency situation abroad.Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and Romania have all decided to make 112 their national emergency number.

The use of social networks has grown over the past year by 35% in Europe and is expected to more than double to 107.4 million users by 2012. To make sure that social networks continue to grow, young users need to feel safe when expanding their networks or sharing any personal information. The agreement signed today in Luxembourg at the Safer Internet Day organised by the European Commission will empower teenagers to deal with potential risks they may face online, like cyberbullying or revealing personal information.

EU Commission review of Ireland's growth and jobs strategy

Together with expanding Human Capital (education and training) and investing in Physical Capital (improving infrastructure) this should help the Irish economy to adjust and gradually return to growth. There is also a need to reform pensions and move towards a low-carbon economy.
